Towards a Research Policy for the New Europe: Changes and Challenges for Public and Private Funders

Since the late 1980s, Europe has witnessed dramatic changes in the political landscape and in daily life. Many of these changes are driven by new developments in science and technology. At the same time, research choices are being made in the anticipation of economic benefits. In this context, the European Commission and private foundations in Europe are rethinking their approaches and priorities. This paper considers some of the changes taking place in research policy, and reflects upon some reconfigurations currently underway.
