Aluminum Scrap Demand, Recovery Down For December

The U.S. aluminum industry purchased an estimated 646 million pounds of aluminum scrap during December, according to aluminum recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior. This represents a decline of just seven-tenths of one percent from the previous month but 15.7 percent below December 2007. USGS estimated that aluminum and aluminum alloys recovery totaled 536 million pounds in December, 15.2 percent less than a year ago. Preliminary data showed that recovery of aluminum from scrap totaled an estimated 7,566 million pounds during 2008, down 11.0 percent from 2007. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government's consumption statistics, totaled 158 million pounds during December, 12.0 percent below the 180 million pounds reported in November. Exports of scrap totaled 4,314 million pounds in 2008, 24 percent above levels reported for 2007, however, exports of scrap have fallen 33.7 percent since July.
