Industry Needs To Balance Supply, Demand For Fiber

Recovered paper will not be in balance in North America due to many factors, such as fewer newspapers and magazines in thernmarketplace, lighter boxes, and export demand continuing to drive away tons for domestic mills, Myles Cohen of Pratt Recycling, told attendees at the Paper Recycling Conference held in Chicago, Illinois earlier this month. "U.S. recycling rates are up...but tons [are going] down," he said. In 2007, the industry collected 54 million tons of fiber, but that number for 2010 could hit a 10 year low of 47 million tons.
