U.S. recyclers can learn a lot from their European counterparts onrnrecycling. Residential recycling in the U.S. is predominantly collected single-stream and leads to approximately 20 percent greater participation than other methods of collection, Scott Jable, Regional Sales Manager, Van Dyk Baler Corp., told attendees at the Residential Recycling Conference held last month in Chicago, Illinois. Landfill space remains prevalent with low tipping fees, he added. However, European residential recycling is driven by landfill avoidance. "Techniques for discouraging waste are more widespread; $300 landfill fees are common. Governmental subsidies for recycling projects are typical," said Jable.
