Recently a delegation drawn from all elements of the British dairy industry supply chain spent a couple of days in Brussels gathering intelligence on future developments that would affect our industry. The delegation met with a number of individuals drawn from a variety of institutions based in Brussels. Information and views were freely offered by all and a reasonable understanding was obtained of what could be in the pipeline over the next few years. One fact, however, tended to overshadow everything else. This was the Commission as the motive power behind all developments in the EU. This is not surprising as it is the Commission that has the sole power to initiate legislation in the EU. At the same time as being the originator of legislation, it also effectively acts as the executive.
