There's an awful lot of talk about the process of liberalisation and de-regulation these days. The dismantling of support structures and the move away from regulated markets is now somehow regarded as inevitable. It seems that the only remaining legitimate question is how fast? But, what seems to be missing, is a dear vision of the end point Well, if liberalisation and trade liberalisation, in particular, was undertaken thoroughly then it would create a truly global market place for dairy products. At the moment, there are several protected national markets or regional markets, with the world market accounting for just 7% of milk volume and operating at lower prices than the markets that are protected by tariff barriers.
