New independent animal welfare body is inevitable

Cross party support should secure controversial plans to share the cost and responsibility of controlling animal disease.rnThis was one of the messages from Defra at a half-day seminar on 27 April as part of its launch of the formal consultation on the creation of a new independent body to take on animal disease control.rnHowever, at least two big issues need to be resolved, said those present. There was concern overrnproposals to separate animal welfare controls from animal health, and disagreement over whether horses should be included in the new funding arrangements.
