No thanks to the tanks

It was late October 1944 when this unforgettable experience happened to me. I was serving with the 36th Infantry Division in southern France and my platoon from Company K had come to rest for the evening in a small, forested area. Most of us had dug in for the night and were trying to get some sleep when a number of tanks suddenly approached our position and scared us out of our resting area, making enough noise to wake the dead. With no apologies from them, we were relieved to discover they were Americans.
