Polish Armed Forces Modernisation Plans

On 28 February 28. Poland's Minister of National Defence, Mariusz Btaszczak, provided details of the new Polish Armed Forces Modernisation Plan (PMT) for the period 2017-2026. The document revealed that Warsaw will spend PLN 185 billion (€43 billion) for new weapons, equipment and services. The plan should have been released in 2017. Part of the rationale for the delay was that the Strategic Defence Review had only recently been completed, with its postulation for increasing the strength of the armed forces and creating a fourth army division as well as increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. These were significant changes to previous assumptions and had a direct effect on the PMT. At the same time, negotiations were in progress for the WISLA medium-range air defence system - the most expensive defence programme in Polish history - and until eventual costs could be estimated accurately, attempts to accelerate release of the PMT were irrelevant.
