With Man Mohan Singh taking over as the Indian Prime Minister for the second consecutive term, the possibility of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, a.k.a. "Agreement 123" being revised and revisited has become a thing of the past. For during the election campaign, opposition parties in general and leftist groups in particular had spoken of the need to rework the deal in the context of maintaining "Indian sovereignty". Significantly, Singh had made it a prestige issue and even staked the survival of his UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government on moving ahead with the deal. In Washington, the newly appointed Indian ambassador Meera Shan-kar said, "We would very much like to move forward in a concrete way with agreements for building nuclear rectors with US assistance in India".
