Airborne sensors are fundamental for modern aircraft, and their evolution represent a key factor both from the technological and operational point of view. The increasing level of miniaturisation and the reduction of costs for high performance computers have translated into a large number of smarter and more capable sensors. Radar, IR search and track, RWR, FLIR, laser systems, mission computers, IFF/communication, databus, Helmet Mounted Display (HMD), and software still represent around of 60% of the cost of a combat aircraft. Types, characteristics, and function of these systems are well known, but today it is fundamental to not only improve their technical characteristics but also perform deep integration among the on-board systems for better situational awareness with particular attention to sensor fusion.
