MT analyses a selection of modern protection systems that answer the requirements of modern day asymmetric threats as well as traditional threats. It is a testament to the effectiveness of armoured vehicles that a multitude of ways to destroy them have been devised since the tank's combat debut a century ago. KE, ATGM, RPG, IED, EFP, HEAT, HESH, APFSDS: This familiar list of abbreviations represents a set of threats any or all of which military vehicles might encounter on the modern battlefield and from which, increasingly, they are expected to provide some protection for their occupants. Whether it is possible to shield every vehicle from every kind of threat effectively is a moot point, and overmatch is always possible. However, human ingenuity has come up with counters to all of them that fit into the mantra of survivability that goes something like: Don't be detected; if detected, don't be engaged; if engaged, don't be hit; if hit, don't be killed.
