Technology: The Final Frontier

Previously in this column we have looked at the way in which the initiative in defence technology has arguably shifted from government to industry. In most nations outside the superpowers (and even in some of them) it is industry that shoulders the burden of funding technologies destined wholly or partially for military applications. Shrinking government budgets are, of course, a major reason for this. But there are also a host of pressures and influences on and drivers for, industry behaviour in this regard.
