On June 14,1943, 35 American soldiers concluded their R & R in Australia and boarded an Army Air Corps plane with six crew members. The plane was supposed to return them to the battlefields of New Guinea, in the Southwest Pacific. But the creaky B-17C Flying Fortress crashed at Bakers Creek, Australia, and all but one on board were killed.
