1st Lt. irwin "zipper" zaetz wasn't supposed to fly that day. But the regular navigator for the B-24J known as Hot as Hell couldn't make the mission, so Zaetz, a strapping, 26-year-old veteran flier from Vermont, agreed to take his place.rnThe date was Jan. 25,1944. The mission: a simple resupply run over the Himalayas from Kunming, China, to Chabua, India. Of course, when flying over some of the highest, most treacherous peaks in the world, nothing is simple. That's why the airmen who routinely made the run called it "flying the Hump." If you could conquer the Hump, you could conquer anything.
