The Ultra Device: The Mobile, the Light, the Portable, the Connected-the 'Ultra'

The trumpets have sounded. The fake white fog has been released on the brightly illuminated stage. Everybody is waiting for the appearance of the next must-have. Owners of multiple iPods and iPhones are milling around, credit cards ready. But as the narrow-beam lasers keep slicing though the white marketing vapor, all we can hear is just more music. Because the event has been produced by chip and software vendors, but the system design actors are missing. System vendors and potential buyers find the definitions of wireless new products risky and confusing. There is no comparison with previous successes. The "Ultra" devices depend on more technical and business variables than the Walkman cassette recorder/player, the PSP and Nintendo game handhelds, the MP3 and video recorder/players, and the latest cellphones.
