New epithet for an Upper Devonian miospore species from the Iberian Pyrite Belt, southwest Spain

A comprehensive bipartite palynological study of Upper Devonian surface and mining exposures located in the Spanish part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (Gonz ez, Playford and Moreno 2005; Gonz ez, Moreno and Playford, 2005) included the systematic description of more than 75 species of miospores and marine organic-walled microphytoplankton, and evaluated their bio-and chronostratigraphic significance. Among the nine newly instituted miospore species, Ancyrospora? implicata was erected to embrace trilete pseudosaccate miospores possessing an exoexine equatorially sculptured with discrete conus- and spine-like projections having mostly truncate and bifurcate distal termini. The attribution of this species to Ancyrospora was regarded as tentative because of its bilayered exoexine, which is unusual for the genus and is not featured by the type species. As pointed out by Dr. John Williams (Department of Palaeontology, Natural History Museum, London, England) in an email to F.G. (16 January 2006), the above binomen was preoccupied, having been formally established in a prior publication. Accordingly, a new epithet is proposed hereunder to replace the original name of the Spanish species.
