With the notable exception of his Lieder, which exhibited an uncommon maturity of thought and expression even from the earliest years, Schubert's compositions followed a logical progression from relatively immature student exercises to superb artistic creations. The piano, chamber, and orchestral works composed while he was a student at the Stadtkonvikt reveal a talented, yet inexperienced, composer who was absorbing the musical styles of his predecessors while experimenting with personal ideas and techniques.
