Once upon a time Sweden had a nuclear weapons program. What made the country change its mind? We get varying and to some extent contradictory answers from those who were politically active at the time, from 1950 to 1972. The question is complex. Thomas Jonter, historian and professor in international relations at Stockholm University, has written a treatise which is likely to be regarded as the definitive account of how the Swedish nuclear weapons program developed initially and then gradually receded.
