IPPNW-Mexico, formerly known as Mexican Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (MMPGN), was one of the first Latin-American IPPNW affiliates to be formed just after IPPNW's creation. Our affiliate was founded, organized and developed under the strong leadership of Dr. Manuel Velasco-Suarez in 1981 and formally established in 1982. Dr Velasco-Suarez was at the time a highly renowned Mexican neurologist who had a profound moral and political influence on different political actors in our country. These two factors were the key that enabled Velasco-Suarez to create one of the largest IPPNW affiliates at the time. In 1991, as medical students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, we became members of MMPGN and started working closely with Velasco-Suarez and a committed team of doctors who were particularly focused on the preparation of the eleventh IPPNW World Congress, that for the first time was going to be held in a developing country - Mexico. Under Dr Velasco-Suarez's vision, a large talented group of physicians were involved in our disarmament work and he assigned them specific tasks for the organization of the IPPNW World Congress.
