Intoxicación de una familia por Karwinskia humboldtiana (Tullidora)

The ingestion of ripe fruit of the Karwinskia humboldtiana, a shrub commonly known as tullidora or coyotillo, produces an intoxication described in the literature as a symmetric flaccid paralysis of the hind limbs, progressive and ascendent, that in severe cases may cause bulbar paralysis and death. The cause of an acute accidental intoxication of an entire family is presented here, wherein ten out of thirteen members ingested the ripe fruit of the tullidora. Three died, the father and two daughters. For the first time the toxins determination in blood by thin layer chromatography method is described. This method supports the diagnosis with other polyradiculoneuritis such as poliomyelitis and the Cuillain Barre's syndrome.%La ingestión del fruto maduro de la Karwinskia humboldtiana, arbusto comúnmente conocido como tullidora o coyotillo, provoca una intoxicación descrita en la bibliografía como una parálisis flaccida, simétrica de los miembros inferiores, progresiva y ascendente, que en casos graves puede causar parálisis bulbary muerte. Se presenta el caso de una familia en la que diez de sus trece miembros ingirieron accidentalmente el fruto de la tullidora; tres fallecieron: el padre y dos hijas. Además, se describe por primera vez, la determinación de las toxinas en sangre por medio de la cromatografía en capa fina. Este método resulta útil para el diagnóstico diferencial con otras polirradiculoneuritis, v.gr. poliomielitis y Síndrome de Guillain-Barre.
