Arctic offshore subsea pipelines are subject to loads from environmental challenges such as seabed ice gouging, seasonal soil settlement due to permafrost thaw, and seabed erosion caused by spring flooding. These conditions can lead to excessive pipeline deformation and/or exposure, which in turn can affect pipeline integrity. With fiber optic temperature sensing systems, operators are able to continuously monitor arctic subsea pipelines for potential soil erosion so that appropriate action can be taken to limit pipeline consequences such as leaks.
