Automated System Detects, Repairs Pavement Cracks

To address the challenges with conventional methods of manually scaling cracks in roadways, researchers with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (Atlanta, Georgia) developed a prototype automated pavement crack detection and sealing system. In road tests, the system detected cracks smaller than 1 /8-in (3-mm) wide and efficiently filled cracks from a vehicle moving at a speed of 3 miles/h (5 km/h).
