Maaskant Shipyards, based in Stellendam, recently delivered a seiner under build number 592. As the vessel's homeport will be Urk, she has received the registration number UK-112. The vessel will be used for fishing by method of "Danish Seine", which means lower fuel consumption and less installed power as the net generates significantly less added drag compared to standard fishing nets. This fishing method also turns out a better quality catch with less environmental impact. It has been success- fully applied in the Scandinavian countries and Scotland. The "Seine" fishing method is an evolved form of the well-known snorrevod way of fishing. A long net (ca. 1500 m) spanning from the surface to the seabed is set out while sailing a circular course. Consequently, both sides of the net are winched in as the fishing boat moves forward slowly. This draws the net wings together and forward and concentrates the fish in the extremity of the net, also called "the bag".
