On 28 September, during a special ceremony, the new backhoe dredger manufactured by IHC Merwede was named ALBERTO ALEMAN ZUBIETA at NMC, cooperation partner to IHC Merwede, in Nieuw-Lekkerland, the Netherlands. The vessel was built for Autoridad del Canal de Panama (ACP) and the ceremony was performed by Ana Matilde Aleman, wife of ACP's former CEO, Alberto Aleman Zubieta. Next to that, a large ACP delegation was present during the event. Built and designed using the latest technological developments, the contract was signed by APC and IHC Global Production on 9 April 2011, the keel was laid on 13 December 2011 and the vessel was launched on 31 August 2012. The backhoe dredger is equipped with a diesel-hydraulic modified Komatsu PC5500 excavator. Due to this the dredger has a maximum dredging depth of 19.5 metres with a 13.5 cubic metre bucket.
