In September 2012, Dutch transport minister Schultz van Haegen opened a new quay on at the port of Holtum-Noord. Thanks to this development the capacity of the harbour has doubled to 300,000 TEU, meaning Holtum-Noord now has the largest inland terminal in the Netherlands. Schultz van Haegen spoke of the logistical potential of the region during the opening. She also mentioned that it was not without reason that the Dutch government assisted in the realisation of the project. Alderman Pieter Meekels stated: "This expansion is important to the logistical development of the region. Thanks to the facilities in Holtum-Noord and the strategic placement, close to the motorway A2, this harbour will become better used."
