Water is a food product and vulnerable to deterioration. The water system on board platforms has to be managed, and the water needs disinfection to assure bacteriological safety and the health of the crew. Bacteriological outbreaks from the water can result in unnecessary commotion and sometimes even panic among the crew, occasionally even with the risk of a complete evacuation and shutdown. The costs involved in such situations are immense and often preventable.
