Occurrence And Distribution Of Hydrocarbons In Surface Sediments From Marseille Bay (france)

Hydrocarbons are widespread contaminants in the marine environment. Among these ubiquitous compounds, some are carcinogenic and mutagenic and may have an important impact on the marine life. Recent data concerning hydrocarbon levels in coastal Mediterranean sediments are available for Cretan sea surficial sediments (Gogou et al., 2000; Gogou and Stephanou, 2004), for pristine sediments of the Eastern Mediterranean (Tsapakis et al., 2003), for sediments of the Porto Torres and Olbia harbours in Sardinia (De Luca et al., 2004, 2005), for coastal sediments from Tunisia (Louati et al., 2001; Zaghden et al., 2007), for sediments of Naples harbour (Sprovieri et al., 2007), for sediments of Stagone coastal lagoon (Culotta et al., 2006) for sediments from the Mar Piccolorn(Cardellicchio et al., 2007) and for sediments from French coastal zones (Mille et al., 1992; Tolosa et al., 1996; Benlahcen et al., 1997; Baumard et al., 1999). Recently, we determined the levels and the origins of hydrocarbons in surface sediments from the Gulf of Fos (Mille et al., 2007) and found that petroleum inputs or combustion of petroleum derived products were not the main source of contamination. In order to (i) implement the data relative to French Mediterranean coasts and (ii) know the influence and impact of the industrial and petrochemical complex of Fos, we undertook a study of the hydrocarbons in surface sediments from Marseille Bay.
