Obituary: Prof Alasdair Mclntyre CBE, BSc DSc (Glasgow), DUniv (Stirling, Edinburgh Napier), FRSE 1926-2010

The Marine Pollution Bulletin is saddened to record the death of Professor Alasdair Mclntyre, on 15th April, at the age of 83, who was a member of the Editorial Board and a notable and extensive contributor for the whole history of the journal. Alasdair was a central figure in Scottish marine biology from first studying at Glasgow University in the 1940s, under the renowned marine biologist Maurice (CM) Yonge, until his death. He was a pre-eminent figure since the 1950s at the Scottish Government Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen - during four decades Alasdair progressed within the laboratory which has undergone several name changes from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland, The Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department, then the Fisheries Research Services and now the Marine Scotland Science laboratory. He became Senior Principal Scientific Officer at the Marine Laboratory in 1973 and then rose to Director; between 1983 and 1986 he was also appointed Professor of Fisheries and Oceanography at Aberdeen University.
