2018 was the worst year of the decade for shipping investors in terms of total return to shareholders. And, we wondered why so few investors were at Marine Money Week One on Ones. On the other hand, as the chart on the top performing companies shows, there are still small fortunes to be made in shipping. Of the 97 companies in this year's rankings, just fifteen generated positive returns for their shareholders. Less than half of those, seven, returned more than ten percent. While the shipping industry is highly cyclical and no stranger to poor returns, 2018 was unusual for being the first time since the Financial Crisis the mean TRS in every sector was negative.
