A bland announcement last month from the International Association of Classification Societies marked the end of a rather nasty internal fight. It said that societies that are members of IACS will implement common rules for tankers and bulk carriers from April 1 next year. The CEOs of IACS societies reached the deal in Paris. Among other things they agreed that the rules would become the property of each individual member society and that cost arrangements "were no longer an issue."
