At 335 m long and 43 m wide and with a capacity of 8,750 TEU, Hapag-Lloyd's Colombo Express is currently the world's largest contain-ership. "Global container transport remains a growth market," noted Michael Behrendt, chairman of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, at the vessel's naming ceremony in Singapore in April. "Today's volume of 71 million standard containers is forecast to grow to almost 91 million by 2008—an increase of almost 30% or 20 million containers." To meet this projected growth, shipowners have been ordering ever larger containerships.
