Gulf Coast under siege

"This is a siege across the entire Gulf." That's how National Incident Commander Thad Allen described the monumental task of battling oil from the BP spill disaster, estimated at press time at about 1 million barrels of oil, now the largest spill in U.S. history. "We're fighting on three fronts," said Allen, pointing out that the response is aimed at stopping the oil from the well, skimming it on the surface and cleaning up about 140 miles of impacted shorelines. Allen made his comments on CBS TV's Face the Nation.
