PIRACY INCIDENTS ECLIPSE 400 IN 2009

For the first time in six years, piracy and armed robbery at sea incidents surpassed 400, reflecting the significant increase in pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden and in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Somalia.rnAccording to the 2009 annual piracy report issued by the ICC International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Cen-rnter, there were 406 report incidents in 2009. It was the third successive year that the number of reported incidents increased. The 406 incidents was a rise of 113 over 2008, when 293 incidents were reported.
