As we launch into the New Year, we take a look at some of the biggest spenders on secondhand tonnage in 2018. What were they buying? Greece's Star Bulk Carriers almost spent $1 billion to acquire 38 bulkers in various transactions, while China's financial institutions, led by Bank of Communications, spent over $2 billion collectively on grabbing tankers, bulkers, and containers. Norway, second only to the U.S. in the offshore oil and gas vessel holdings, was active in acquiring mobile offshore drilling units. Borr Drilling spent $720 million on five MODUs.
