Membrane technology: key to pure wastewater

As environmentally-driven legislation impacts further on ships' wastewater treatment, a number of companies are racing to fully develop more effective, chemical-free systems that deal with both grey and black water utilsing novel membrane technology. After a number of high-profile cases where cruiseships have been found discharging 'hazardous wastewater' in US coastal waters, the Environmental Protection Agency has taken a much more stringent view regarding the control of all discharges to within prescribed limits. Areas such as Florida and Alaska have already been declared Zero Discharge Zones preventing the release of any treated water. And pressure is mounting for ships, cruiseships in particular, to implement more effective grey water treatment and to provide more reliable black water treatment systems.
