German research and trials ship constiction authorised

In 1998, Thyssen Nordseewerke (TNSW) of Emden won a contest for the design and construction of an advanced new Defence Research & Trials Ship (WFES — Wehrforschungs und Erpropungsschiff: Type 751). This vessel would replace the 35 year-old Planet which had originally been scheduled for retirement in 1996. As is not unusual today, the construction order had to be held pending budget approval which has now been granted. Entry into service is now scheduled for 2004.
