The Caretaker evacuation concept can identify those cabins in which passengers are responding to the alarm and those in which they are not. The computerised evacuation and survival system Caretaker was developed following the Scandanavian Star disaster, where passengers and crew were caught asleep in their cabins during a fire which engulfed the vessel; others died from smoke and gas inhalation whilst attempting escape.
