Throughout the past decade, a number of superconducting rotating motors with High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) field windings (wire) have been demonstrated, with several projects now swiftly advancing to the development stage. Only last month, the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced that it has selected the American Superconductor Corporation (AMCS) as the primary contractor to design and build a prototype 36.5MW high temperature superconductor (HTS) propulsion motor for the US Navy. A prototype 5MW version for delivery in July has already started factory tests, and has been integrated with an Alstom VDM5000 commercial power electronic drive and dynamometer for load testing. These tests will confirm full torque at partial speed and partial load at rated speed conditions.
