With thousands of bulkers requiring water ingress detection equipment, it is expected that manufacturing delivery lead times will be extended as demand for equipment reaches its peak in the summer of 2004. Applying level detectors to cargo holds on bulk carriers places equipment in one of the most hostile of marine environments. Minimal maintenance with optimum resistance to corrosion, dust and mechanical damage are thus likely to be critical. Put another way, the technology will have to work or owners risk detention. The IMO standard was clear regarding the required system functionality, and was also specific in demanding two sensors per cargo hold, one at a low level typically at 0.5m elevation representing a pre-alarm, and one typically at 2m for main alarm detection.
