Charting future careers

A welter of training and re-training initiatives have been initiated across the Middle East region and are delivering results. The Arab Academy for Science Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Alexandria, Egypt is a case in point. It recently announced a new training facility specifically to cater for the expanding LNG sector. The centre is due to become operational-around mid-2006, and will provide training in accordance with model courses drawn up by the IMO. The curriculum will encompass all aspects of the gas industry supply train, opening up opportunities for terminal and production platform operators as well as seafarers. Captain Hussein Hegazy from the AASTMT told MER that the academy is, at the time of writing, in negotiation with British Gas and British Petroleum for additional technical support.
