Apresentation* at the recent Marine Failures Conference, organised by IMarEST and held last month in London, highlighted many of the causes and proposed ways and means of avoiding such problems.rnUnderlying the failures is the destruction or excessive wear of line shafting or crankshaft bearing material. However while the root causes of failure of mechanical parts is usually not evident, examination of broken parts will show the consequences of the failure, and expert investigations should reconstruct the scenario leading to rupture (which is always initiated when the system is running).
