Vibrations,corrosion,smearing, rust damage, misalignment, preloading, excessive speed and general wear and tear are just some of the threats faced by bearings onboard a vessel. Accordingly, regular maintenance is vital in order to maintain adequate propulsion of a vessel. This is particularly true in the current depressed economy where taking a vessel out of circulation has significant financial implications for the operator - and may affect the manufacturer. A case in point is that of the Mermaid pods that are reported to have experienced repeated bearing failure with four sets of bearings replaced on four pods between 2003 and 2008 - leading vessel owner Carnival to undertake successful legal action.
