There's no such thing as a free lunch. There's no gain without pain. If you take two steps forward, there will be one step back. It might appear pessimistic, but that's just life. This somewhat 'Eyore-ish' attitude has been provoked by the coincidence of a number of articles and observations which have tended merely to reinforce these ancient sayings. It begins with our quest for clean air, which seems reasonable, although if you are old enough to remember one of the 'London particulars', the smogs which brought the capital regularly to a standstill until we stopped burning coal, it puts modern emissions into perspective.
