All the premier academic institu tions have engineroom simulators. 'South Tyneside College has always included simu lators within the training at both cadet and senior marine level. The emphasis for the cadets is on identification and awareness, whereas at the higher level we stress the man agement of the response procedures to emer gencies' says Gary Hindmarch, Director of Business Development at South Tyneside College. Hindmarch also explains that 'simu lators often show up problems with a seafar er's knowledge rather than their ability.' This shows that although very important, the use of simulators in the overall development of marine engineers is only a part of the overall mix of techniques that should be used.
