The ILO's Maritime Labour Convention (2006) comes in to force this August, with the aim of setting standards for the rights and protection of seafarers around the globe. Envisioned as far back as 2001 the convention was ratified as of the 20th of August 2012, having secured the necessary support in terms of flag states and tonnage. However, it was relegated to the sidelines for the past few years while owners battled the financial demons of the recession.
