Arecently published pleasing little 74 page book entitled 'Tarn to Titanic', recounts the life and times of Joseph Bell RNR, chief engineering officer of the ill-fated R.M.S Titanic and will be of great interest to many in the maritime world. The book includes numerous photographs and provides a historical summary and coal mining background of the tiny rural village of Farlam near Talkin Tarn, located a few miles to the east of Carlisle. It was in this district that Joseph Bell grew up, finishing his education in the local area, before serving an engineering apprenticeship with Robert Stephenson and Co, in Newcastle-upon Tyne between 1876 and 1881.
