Double trouble for women in STEM

Recent reports have shown virtually unsurmountable hurdles to drawing in and retaining women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). A survey of 4,000 girls, young women, parents and teachers by Accentu re revealed that there is a wide perception that boys are better suited to STEM subjects and careers. Over half (51 %) of the teachers and 43% of the parents surveyed shared this perception. Furthermore, previous research by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) revealed that only 7% of parents feel that engineering would appeal to their daughters as a career -far below the 1.82 million engineers it is estimated the country will need by 2022.
