Alternative communications to satellite networks

Along range wireless system can provide communications for ships and fixed assets as an alternative to VSAT. There are specific networks of these systems in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico for the offshore oil and gas industry. These enable drilling rigs and offshore construction and support vessels to use broadband communications for operations and crew welfare. A similar system could provide an alternative to satellite communications for ships operating near ports if coastal WiMax infrastructure is built, or if ships can connect to the terrestrial 3G or 4G mobile networks.
