摘要

In industry parlance textife machinery industry is known as "Textile Engineering Industry (TEI)". TEI das Been an integral support arm for the Indian textile industry since its inception. That was the reason manufacturers started producing machineries in the country with foreign collaboration almost five decades ago. With the growth of the textile and clothing industry in the country, the textile machinery sector has also grown to a decent size over the years. However the bottom-line remained weak. The reasons are multi fold viz. poor focus on R&D and adoption of technology, devaluing issue of brand Building, failure in sniffing opportunities, quality of services, marketing strength etc. Today while the textile manufacturing industry is going through a phase of rapid capacity building, TEI is unable to deliver. As a result we have to depend largely on imported technology and machineries. The lead players are European suppliers when it comes to high end product manufacturing. TEI's reaction is that the policy related issues hampered the growth of this sector. Imparity in customs duty and excise duty has dampened the growth of the TEI sector. However, considering the need of the user industry and future prospects, TEI must enhance its capacity and technology level for entire sub-segments of the textile manufacturing chain. This would not only require effort by just the TEI But would also need the support of the Government as wellas from the user industry.
